Dawley Angling Society – Matches

Dawley Angling Society runs a packed schedule of matches for full members from March through to November each year, covering a wide variety of venues, to cater to everyone’s taste and preferred style of fishing. During the winter months, we run open matches, which are open for full members, honorary members, and none members and give further opportunities for competition, outside of the main match season.

In recent years, the Society has offered the opportunity for honorary members to fish club matches if spare pegs are available. The number of Full members has grown as a result of this initiative and we can no longer guarantee that there will be spaces on some of the most popular venues. However, we are keen to give honorary members a chance to fish ‘taster matches’ with a view to applying for full membership, if you enjoy the experience. We are therefore now offering honorary members the chance to fish two taster matches each season. If you would like to apply to fish a taster match, please email dawleyanglingsociety@gmail.com at least a week in advance of your preferred match and our Match Manager will make contact with you, to confirm if a peg is available for you to fish.

Society Rules

Our Society rules relate to all matches on our own waters.

When visiting other fisheries, the fishery rules of the controlling clubs rules apply. Please be sure to check the fishery website to ensure that you know and understand their rules.

Any non member attending contests as a spectator must stay with the angler that they attended with at all times. Once on the peg, spectators cannot aid anglers in any way. Any member receiving outside help (including the setting up of tackle) risk disqualification.

Trophies

As you would expect from a society with such a significant history, we have trophies that have been donated over time and are engraved with each annual winners name.  Trophies are presented to the winner of each match at the annual presentation each year. The majority of trophies have been in the society for a many years and have great historic value. We ask that trophies are looked after whilst in your possession and should be returned to the society clean and with no damage, ready for the next presentation.

Society Championship

We run an annual Society Championship competition, with points being awarded for your finishing position in each match that you fish. The angler with the highest points aggregate at the end of the year is declared champion. There are also prizes for the runner up and third placed angler in the championship. You can view the current ‘league’ standings here (hyperlink to League standings please).  As well as a trophy, the top three anglers in the Society Club Championship receive cash prizes of £100 for first place, £75.00 for second and £50 for third. These are over and above the prize money awarded on the day of the match.

Aggregate Competitions and Prize Money

There are other cash prizes to be won through the annual matches.

The Society runs a Commercial Championship and Silver Fish Championship each year. In each championship, points are awarded for your finishing position in four designated matches at commercial fisheries or silver fish venues and the angler with the highest points aggregate at the end of the qualifying matches, is declared champion. As well as a trophy, the winner of these championships wins £50.

The Individual match is fished each year and carries prize money of £25.

Other trophy aggregate competitions are:

  • The Albert Rhodes Trophy – presented to the angler with the highest points from the river matches.
  • The Steve Brown Memorial Cup – presented to the angler with the highest points from two matches on the Top Pool, two matches on canals and two matches on the river.
  • The J Aveley Trophy – presented to the angler with the highest points from the S Williams Cup, D Hartshorne Cup, W Jones Cup and the G Bullock Cup.
